Sinkhole won’t stop growing and is now more than 1,000ft wide and 400ft deep

A massive sinkhole in Texas grew to be 1,000ft wide and 400ft deep in just one night.

Despite being stable for years, the rim of the sinkhole in Daisetta, southeastern Texas began crumbling once again on Sunday.

Residents said it sounded like ‘gunshots’ were coming from the ground.

After going to bed they woke up to find it had gained around 150ft in both width and depth.

Neighbour Linda Hoover told KTRK: ‘We just never thought it would start again.

‘When we bought our house a few years ago, we were under the understanding that it was stabilized.’

She and her family had packed their bags – ready to flee in case the hole overcame them.

Some residents said they were losing sleep over fears the hole would destroy them all.
